Sharing the art of guitar-makingQuality, hand-crafted guitars are hard to come by. The skills of the old craftsman are becoming a lost art as the major music stores are forced to handle instruments mass produced in foreign countries such as China where concerns of quality and craftsmanship are second to quantity and price. For that reason, I am committed to passing along my skills. In December of 2008, I began teaching guitar-making classes in my shop on the west side of Cincinnati, OH. Classes will be held every Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30 until 10:30 p.m. Each session will run for 10 weeks. When the student completes his/her course, he/she will have created a hand-crafted instrument of considerable value and quality -- and the ability to reproduce it for others. My primary purpose will be to teach the construction of fretted musical instruments to students enrolled in the program. The long- term goal will be to hire students to also begin making and selling instruments in a world market from this facility. These products will be unique in that each instrument will be the creation of the individual student. Each student will determine the style composition, and artwork of his/her instrument. Instructors will teach students all aspects of instrument-making, including selection of materials and style of instrument. The student will learn to create an instrument with a particular sound and optimal playability - and it will be uniquely beautiful. The type of instrument produced will depend on the level of the student's ability, resulting in different categories and prices. Beginner classes will cost $2200, plus material costs. Materials average $600 and up, depending on the student's choice. |
